Hello,
I’m Paul, owner of Rideworks, and in the last 18 months proud owner of Shand Cycles.
It’s become apparent that many folks still don’t know what has happened in the previous 18 months or so and that’s my fault, and so I wanted to take the time to write a little bit about what has happened at Shand and fill everyone in on our plans going forward. I suppose it’s just a moment to share where we’ve been and more importantly, where we’re going.
Shand Cycles has earned a loyal following for its handcrafted steel bikes, designed and built in Scotland with care and purpose. In 2018, the business entered a different phase when it became part of Liberty Steel Group. That relationship helped scale production and opened new doors, but as with many things, growth brought complexity and took a bit of heart.
In November 2023, I acquired Shand Cycles through Rideworks, a company I’ve built around precision, independence, and a passion for well-engineered bikes and components. From the start, my goal has been simple: Returning Shand to an independent company.
It’s important to me that people know: Shand is now a small, family-run business again. We design, weld, paint, and assemble our bikes right here in the UK, using materials we believe in and processes we can stand behind. We even have some of the original Shand team.
We’re not a factory brand or a label applied to outsourced frames. We’re frame builders, riders, machinists and engineers, committed to building bikes that are made to be ridden and built to last.
So what’s next? Well, we’ve kicked things off with a new look website. We’re already working on refreshing our product line-up, Developing the models that define who Shand are and developing new builds that reflect our heritage in adventure, endurance, and performance steel bikes. Something we’re really looking forward to sharing with you.
This is a long-term journey, and we’re doing it correctly, with intention, with clarity, and with pride.
Thanks for being part of the Shand journey, it’s been one hell of a ride. We’re proud to have shared it with such a loyal crew. Your support has meant the world, and as we look to the future, we hope you’ll keep backing us. We’re building something great. Let’s do it together.
All the best,
Paul

Paul thanks for the update, really useful and wish you all the best. Thanks also for refreshing my Stoater last year it’s riding well and looking fabulous
Cheers Ed
Good to hear you are back.
Wishing you much success.
Andrew
Thanks
Your email is welcome, as I was totally unaware of Shands return to independence. Well done for ensuring Shand remains dedicated to high quality and unique builds; afterall that was its USP and what attracted most buyers in the first place. Good luck in the future.

Nice to see its being liberated back to independence

Thanks Paul
Paul,
All the best in your endeavours.
Thank you
Hi Paul,
thank you for the update from an avid Shand Bahookie (Rohloff, Belt) user. I’m looking forward to what the next chapter will bring. I’m in the market for a new frame+fork combo.
If I might give you one tip: store the colour scheme of the paintjob with the frame number in your administration. I’ve bought my current Bahookie pre-loved and have no easy way to find out what colour it has been painted for some touch-ups.
Hi Daniel, thanks – Yes we do keep the information on every bike.
Well done … I’m interested in Shand again. Good luck.
Thanks Laird
Sounds exciting! Thanks Paul.
Thank you
Best of luck Paul
I can attest to the levels of customer service you offer, helping sort an issue ahead of a two week back packing trip to Italy – during which my Stooshie performed better than I did! I didn’t know a great deal about Shand when I made my lockdown purchase but the bike has been, frankly, superb. I have been on several bike packing/touring holidays and another awaits in hilly Norfolk next week.
Best of luck with it all
Adam
Cheers Adam, your recent adventure looked epic

Thanks for the information, Paul. What you are in the process of doing sounds like a good idea. They look like beautiful bikes.
All the best,
Martin
Thanks. Obviously I don’t buy new bikes too often but the Shand I have is an absolutely fantastic bike that has served me so well. The ethos you put across is exactly the ethos that mattered when I bought the Shand and still would/ will when I buy again.
Best 4K I ever spent.
Brilliant
This was great to read. I first came across Shand cycles a few years ago and was impressed by the genuine care and thought going into the design and build. I love that you have been determined to return it to a proper independent company not just a label on a more generic bike. I still haven’t got myself a Shand as they are quite pricey on my budget but it’s nice to know that when I one day do get one, it will be a proper UK built bike made by people who are really passionate about great cycling.
Thanks Bex
Hello Paul!
It’s great to hear, I have a Shand Stoater,
when of few in Sweden, and I love the Bike and use it almost Evert day all year
around.
Mostly gravel now in the summer, with fat gravel tyres, it works perfect!
We are planning going to Scotland maybe next year for gravel.
Best regards

It’s great to know the company will keep going and return to its independent roots. I have a Daunder which I love and goes as well as the day it arrived with its bombproof Rohloff gearing
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the update. I collected my Tam from you at Livingston in November 2023 when you were beginning the transition to Coventry. I’m really happy with it. I wish you the very best for the future.
Kind regards,
Martin
This is absolutely fantastic news. I know from speaking to Paul that he cares deeply about building the best bikes and components here in the UK. I’ve seen the bikes in person and they are beautiful machines made to be ridden. He has worked so hard to get to where he and the brand are and is 100% committed to the journey. I know my next bike will definitely be a Shand.
Thanks Malc
Good news, but I’d still miss the “Made in Scotland” label.
Hi Graeme – they’re made in Glasgow. Cheers
I first heard of Shand just after a bought my first bike elsewhere. There and then, although it took several years to come to fruition, I resolved to buy my next bike from Shand. That time finally came to pass in 2024, when Shand made me a magnificent, customised, Tam. I absolutely love my Tam and get lots of compliments about it, even from people who know nothing about bikes, let alone from those who do.
I’m now trying to think of reasons to buy another bike from this amazing company. Time (& my wife 😉 ) will tell if I do.
Hang on there, Paul. Long may Shand continue as a bicycle manufacturer of excellence and reliability.
Thanks John, we are so pleased you love the Tam, great colour too.
Cheers
Thanks for the email, I wish you the best for years to come. I hope Russell is still part of your team as he is a first class ambassador for your company. He spent hours helping me size & design my Stooshie.
Hi Paul, Yes Russell is still very much here. We hope you’re enjoying your Stooshie.
Best
Paul & Russ
